Bareboat Chartering Basics: FAQs for First-Time Charterers

So, you’ve recently completed your ASA 104 certification, congratulations! You’re now qualified to embark on your first bareboat charter. But before you set sail, you probably have some questions. Here’s a guide to the most frequently asked questions to help ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.

What is a Bareboat Charter?

A bareboat charter is a rental arrangement where you take full responsibility for the boat without a hired captain or crew. You and your crew will handle all aspects of sailing, navigation, anchoring, and provisioning. How exciting!

What Qualifications Do I Need?

Most charter companies require at least an ASA 104 (or equivalent) certification. Some may also ask for a sailing resume to confirm your experience. Certain regions may require additional licensing, such as the International Proficiency Certification (Mediterranean). This is a simple certificate you can apply for online. You must be an active member with ASA. For more information: ASA IPC Link.

How to start: the first steps to sailing on your own.

  • When are you planning on going? General holidays will be a more expensive time to travel. Keep severe weather patterns in mind as well (hurricane season, rainy season).
  • Where will your destination be? If you are chartering in the BVI you are not allowed in USVI waters, and vice versa. Checking in and out of countries will also need to be taken into consideration.
  • How long will you want to be sailing for? Consider check in and out times (see below)
  • What kind of boat is ideal for your group? A catamaran offers comfort and stability for those who are first time sailors.

What timeline does a typical Charter follow?

Just like at a hotel, there are check in and out times for your bareboat charter. Typically check in time is around 5pm. Charter boats are not allowed to operate at night so with the late check in time your first night will be spent in the marina. Early check in time can be an option at an additional charge, depending on availability, if you would like to start your adventure on the first day.
Check out time is anywhere from 9am-11am. For earlier check out times, the base might require your last night to also be spent in the marina.

What is the Boat Checkout Process Like?

Upon arrival, the charter company will provide a detailed briefing covering:

  • Safety equipment and procedures
  • Engine operation and systems (fuel, water, batteries)
  • Navigation tools and charts
  • Dinghy and outboard motor operation
  • Local sailing regulations and hazards

A walkthrough inspection ensures everything is in working order before departure. If for any reason something is not in working order, let the base know right away and do not leave the dock until it is fixed.

How Do I Plan Provisioning?

  • Make a Meal Plan– Plan simple, easy-to-cook meals. Some anchorages will not have services, you will need to plan for these meals.
  • Shop Smart– Purchase non-perishable staples and fresh foods that last longer.
  • Consider Local Options– Research grocery stores or provisioning services near the marina.
  • Check Storage & Equipment– Know your fridge/freezer space and onboard cooking facilities. Typically a cooler will also be on board.

What is included on your bareboat charter?

  •  Charter boats will come equipped with essentials like silverware, plates/cups, cooking utensils and pots/pans, knives, coffee pot (usually a French press) and clothespins. Just like an Airbnb they have the basics.
  • A “starter pack”: depending on the company, typically- one roll of TP in each head, one roll of paper towels, a small bottle of dish soap, one bottle of drinking water, bar of soap in each head, a few garbage bags, matches, and a sponge.
  • Cabin Set up: fully made beds with sheets, pillows, blanket and bath towels, and hand towels for both the heads and kitchen. ALWAYS double check to make sure that each cabin you are using has the proper linens.
  • Full Fuel and water tanks should be full before departure. Also, check fuel for the dinghy!
  • Dinghy with an outboard engine
  • Extras: WIFI package, fishing poles, Stand up paddle boards/kayaks, etc. Depending on availability, at extra cost.

What Should I Know About Navigation & Route Planning?

  • Review Charts & Weather– Always check updated charts and weather forecasts. Downloadable guides are also available for most destinations.
  • Plan Realistic Distances– Avoid over-scheduling; allow time for rest and unexpected delays.
  • Identify Anchorages & Mooring Areas– Research recommended spots in advance. Make reservations if needed.
  • Follow Local Rules– Understand marine traffic regulations and mooring permit requirements.
  • Join Facebook groups– research your desired destination and join a Facebook group for that area. This is a great place to get on demand, real time answers about your location.

Do I Need Insurance?

Charter companies typically require a security deposit or insurance coverage. Some offer optional damage waivers. Make sure to understand the terms and what is covered before setting sail. Charters booked through LTD Sailing will include a Yacht Damage Waiver.

What Are the Common Costs Beyond the Rental Fee?

  • Fuel costs (charged based on usage)
  • Dockage or mooring fees
  • Provisioning and dining expenses
  • Insurance or security deposit
  • Optional extras (water toys, Wi-Fi, etc.)

What Are Some Common Mistakes First-Timers Make?

  • Underestimating the Learning Curve– Give yourself extra time to get familiar with the boat.
  • Overpacking– Space is limited, so pack light and efficiently.
  • Skipping Safety Briefings– Always pay attention to emergency procedures.
  • Neglecting Weather Checks– Monitor forecasts daily to adjust plans as needed.
  • Failing to Communicate with Crew– Assign roles and ensure everyone understands basic sailing tasks.

Please note: You cannot bareboat charter on your own. A qualified captain and first mate are required.
